Misalignment frequently leads to significant vibration problems in various rotating machines. The rotor-bearing structure is developed using higher order predetermined fundamentals by allowing for deflection, slope, power, and torque. The two types of misalignment are angular and parallel misalignment.
Angular misalignment is separated into vertical and horizontal misalignment. Angular misalignment is where the motor shaft lay below an angle with the pump shaft, but both shafts remain on the same plane. Angular vertical misalignment is where both shafts are still in the same vertical plane. Angular horizontal misalignment is where both shafts are still in the same horizontal plane.
Parallel misalignment can also be separated into two misalignment categories, vertical and horizontal. With vertical misalignment the misalignment deals with the shafts on the vertical plane and horizontal misalignment is the shafts misalignment on the horizontal plane.
Parallel misalignment is where the motor shaft is moved away from the pump shaft, but both shafts are still in the same plane and parallel. With vertical misalignment the motor shaft is moved vertically with both shafts still in the same vertical plane. Conversely with horizontal misalignment the motor shaft is moved horizontally with both shafts still in the same horizontal plane.
Misalignment can be cause by angular or parallel misalignment issues. Misalignment may also be caused by the combination of both angular and parallel misalignment.
The Solution is having a quality laser alignment maintenance program.
The benefits of Laser alignment can be shown on large and small misalignments. Even very small misalignments can have significant effects on the machine!
Every laser alignment should be performed from start to finish using the same fundamental process. Once you employ this process into all laser alignments, the average time spent on laser alignment will go down.
Results of a Quality Laser Alignment Program
•	Reduction in repairs
•	Reduction in downtime
•	Reduction in loss of production
•	Increased equipment ROI!

Plant maintenance and preventative maintenance is a definite cost for the engineering industry! Companies frequently halt any form of maintenance in order to save on the bottom line. This happens to all of us when we need to tighten the belt. These companies end up having higher maintenance costs than their peers who plan and/or predict maintenance activities. Predictive maintenance allows companies to spend a defined amount of money in the beginning that will lead to big savings in the end.
That being said, this is the precise reason why companies needing laser alignment services, laser alignment equipment rental, and internal laser alignment turbine services on an emergency basis have become quite common. It is common practice for maintenance teams at plants to perform what is known as “reactive maintenance” tasks, which refers to fixing a machine only when a repair situation appears. These types of repairs can sneak up on a plant causing a domino effect on the whole production line.
When mission critical assets go down, they may require emergency laser alignment to get the equipment up and running in a timely manner. That’s where ACQUIP, INC comes in to play. Our teams of seasoned professionals are ready to jump on an airplane, helicopter, or ship to get to where your problem is and they immediately get to work to solve your problem.
Emergency laser alignment could be required for gas turbines, steam turbines, wind turbines, drive shafts, diaphragms, and many more applications where down time is costly or just plain unacceptable. This may also mean you need laser alignment rental equipment on site yesterday. When there is a laser alignment emergency you can count on ACQUIP, INC to be there for all of your laser alignment service needs.
Our professionals come with our state-of-the-art equipment. They know the intricacies of the tools and that makes the emergency laser alignment go faster and with optimum results. Isn’t that what you’re looking for?
The next time you need emergency laser alignment, contact ACQUIP, INC for fast, reliable service.

Many people ask, “What is an ERAG for?” When you need to measure the differential distances between two adjacent surfaces you can use an ERAG.
The Electronic Radial Alignment Gauge (ERAG) or Concentricity Alignment Tool (CAT) provides you with many benefits.
•	Does away with tight wire and/or laser alignment.
•	Directly measures the amount of diaphragm misalignment with the rotor in place.
•	Factory and field-tested method of diaphragm alignment since 1992.
•	Alignment method proven thru thousands of hours of use.
•	Cost effective – often pays for itself in one outage!
•	Easy to use – direct readout.
•	Accommodates a wide range of turbine sizes.
•	Very accurate (resolution to .0001 inch – accuracy plus or minus.0005 inch maximum).
•	Durable – units rarely require maintenance even after years of service.
•	Parts are readily obtained from the factory and are usually field replaceable.
So I am sure you are asking yourself…how will this tool work for my project?
Inserted into the empty packing groove, the Concentricity Alignment Tool (CAT) allows annular space variations to be displayed on a LCD display as it is pulled through the packing groove as shown.
The head “rub bars” ride on the turbine shaft and the head lever arm rides on the ID of the diaphragm. As the head is pulled through the packing groove, the lever arm follows the contour of the diaphragm ID and the dimensional variation is displayed.
Our instruments have a main body to which there is pivotally coupled a U frame whose arms extend at an angle from its base, so that as the former is pivoted in one direction, the latter will correspondingly pivot in an opposite direction.
Contact points are provided to the arms and the bottom surface of the body, and the base of the U frame is biased by a spring loaded slidable element within the body which in turn is connected to a transducer.
An ideal way to accomplish alignment is with the rotor in place so the dimension from rotor to seal carrier can be measured directly. One of the best methods of measuring between the rotor and the carrier includes an ERAG.
ERAG rental from ACQUIP, INC makes moving the instrument between two adjacent surfaces a breeze!

A machine temperature change during operating conditions from the time the machine is off line to when it is running is normal. The most significant temperature change is the in the machine bearings and supports. This is the machine’s thermal growth or dynamic movement.

Thermal growth or Dynamic Movement is the change in the distance end to end of a particular metal as a result of the change in temperature of that metal. Usually, when a metal bar is heated, it will elongate. These changes in length can be small or large.

It is critical to have machinery aligned at hot operating conditions, not just cold conditions. It is essential that machines be monitored from cold to hot operating conditions in order to properly adjust for thermal growth as well as incalculable relative torque movement.

ACQUIP uses the most advanced laser-based alignment systems to configure your machines optimal coupling alignment targets throughout its thermal range.

ACQUIP’s thermal growth monitoring services facilitate maximum running efficiency and productivity. The fact is, it is important to have your machines aligned during running conditions.

The use the Electronic Radial Alignment Gauge (ERAG) or Concentricity Alignment Tool (CAT) negates the need for tight wire and/or laser alignment. This tool can directly measure the amount of diaphragm misalignment with the rotor in place. These tools have a proven alignment method through thousands of hours of use.
The Electronic Radial Alignment Gauge (ERAG) or Concentricity Alignment Tool (CAT) is very cost effective and can often pay for itself in one outage! This tool is known to be very easy to use and gives you direct readouts.
The Electronic Radial Alignment Gauge (ERAG) or Concentricity Alignment Tool (CAT) accommodates a wide range of turbine sizes and is very accurate (resolution to .0001 inch – accuracy plus or minus.0005 inch maximum). This tool is Durable and these units rarely require maintenance even after years of service. Parts for the Electronic Radial Alignment Gauge (ERAG) or Concentricity Alignment Tool (CAT) are readily obtained from the factory and are usually field replaceable.
So I am sure you are asking yourself…how will this work for my project?
Inserted into the empty packing groove, the Concentricity Alignment Tool (CAT) allows annular space variations to be displayed on a LCD display as it is pulled through the packing groove as shown.
The head “rub bars” ride on the turbine shaft and the head lever arm rides on the ID of the diaphragm. As the head is pulled through the packing groove, the lever arm follows the contour of the diaphragm ID and the dimensional variation is displayed.
The Electronic Radial Alignment Gauge (ERAG) or Concentricity Alignment Tool (CAT) instruments have a main body to which there is pivotally coupled a U frame whose arms extend at an angle from its base, so that as the former is pivoted in one direction, the latter will correspondingly pivot in an opposite direction.
ERAG rental from ACQUIP, INC makes moving the instrument between two adjacent surfaces a breeze

Plant Maintenance staffs must service and maintain gas turbines and steam turbines to keep them in satisfactory operating condition. Plant Maintenance must provide for systematic inspection, detection, and correction of failures either before they occur or before they develop into major defects. It is vital to pay close attention to these issues to increase reliability for plant rotating equipment.

Maintenance (including tests, measurements, adjustments, and parts replacement) is performed specifically to prevent faults from occurring to gas turbines and steam turbines.

Preventive maintenance for gas turbines and steam turbines are considered to be worthwhile. There are risks such as human error involved when performing preventive maintenance. This is why you need to make sure you are employing a well trained expert maintenance staff for your gas turbine and steam turbine preventative maintenance measures. It is important to contract out your gas turbine and steam turbine projects to experts that utilize the latest technology for gas turbine and steam turbine maintenance.

Preventive maintenance such as scheduled gas turbine and steam turbine overhaul or scheduled replacement for your gas turbine or steam turbine, provides proactive failure management policies available to the maintenance engineer.

Common methods of determining what preventive failure management policies should be applied to gas turbines and steam turbines are:

OEM recommendations

What an “expert” thinks ought to be done.

The maintenance that’s already done to similar equipment.

Measured values and performance indications.

To make it simple:

Preventive maintenance is conducted to keep gas turbines and steam turbines working and/or extend the life of the equipment.

Preventative maintenance can be looked at as a large upfront expense or an unnecessary expense. This can be a very expensive mistake. Corrective maintenance can end up costing much more. Unplanned maintenance also requires unplanned gas turbine and steam turbine shut downs to get equipment working again.

The ACQUIP, INC Express Alignment Service is an ideal internal alignment process for saving time and money! The Express alignment process is a method that allows for less downtime for steam turbine internal alignment when performing a diaphragm alignment. ACQUIP, INC is the expert at providing express alignment service, which is an alternative to tops on/ tops off diaphragm alignment.

With the turbine top off, the turbine diaphragm position, packing rubs, and shell deviations are measured and recorded. These measurements are used to calculate the theoretical turbine tops on position without actually putting in the man labor required to measure a turbine in the tops on position. The Express Alignment process takes laser alignment readings for all internal components which are then combined with horizontal joint deviation and out of roundness readings. When all of the turbine components are assembled, they are placed into the ideal calculated position.

Express Alignment alters the traditional alignment process by not having to put on and take off the top of the turbine cylinder. A significant amount of the plant’s time and money is saved. The laser alignment process is ideal for steam turbines of all sizes, large or small, and of all fuel types. Setting up a laser for alignment is fast and does not interrupt any other work while the service is in process. Laser Alignment readings are non user dependent therefore there is almost no space for human error.

Having a good maintenance program in place is vital in keeping your plant functioning smoothly. This, though, does not mean having a “super” in-house maintenance staff that does everything perfectly, nor does it mean letting another company completely be the maintenance staff. In some cases, outsourcing your maintenance needs is more beneficial than having your in-house staff do the job, and vice-versa.

When a company is struggling financially, like many have been in recent years, one of the first things that gets cut or put off is maintenance, which leads to the maintenance staff being reduced. In contracting services to an outside company, you constantly maintain maintenance staff levels low, saving your company money that can be used for other projects. While the in-house maintenance staff focuses on reoccurring tasks, a service company can come in for the few times the plant requires more complicated and specific skills and tools. One can argue that if you want a job to be performed correctly, then you must go to those that expertise in that field. This frees the burden of having to purchase specialty equipment, like laser alignment and vibration analysis equipment, for a task that happens very infrequently. In some industries that have technology evolving at a fast rate, it is not worth the time and money spent on training staff new maintenance techniques. Aside from performing the maintenance task itself, many service companies provide their own service equipment, software, and follow up the service with a full detailed report for the company they did the service for.

Companies turn to outsourcing their maintenance needs when their in-house maintenance program is failing, but this does not have to be the case either. With the proper training, instead of having to find the experts in the service required, your own team can become the experts. Many companies tend to feel more comfortable having the employees they know and trust to perform maintenance needs, especially when it comes to complicated, specialty tasks. Also, should an emergency arrive, some companies prefer having a trained staff on hand to handle the situation should a service provider not arrive quickly enough. The in-house maintenance staff would also be more familiar and sensitive to your company’s priorities and preferences.

A successful maintenance program finds their perfect balance between outsourcing and having a trained maintenance staff. Through the partnership with a service company, training, equipment, and the service itself can be provided as needed easing the maintenance process.

At ACQUIP, INC, aside from laser alignment services, we offer comprehensive laser alignment training programs that are customized to your company’s needs. With knowledgeable and experienced instructors and hands-on training for your staff, you can feel confident that your maintenance staff will be receiving the best training. ACQUIP, INC also offers laser alignment equipment rentals for when you want your in-house staff to perform the service.

This year, China has been repeatedly named as the nation that is leading the worldwide race to developing renewable energy practices. In less than a decade, China has pushed past nations like Germany, Spain, and the United States and has taken over the renewable energy market.

China aims to have wind, solar, and biomass energy to be able to generate 8% of its electricity by 2020, more than twice as much as its generation capability today. Earlier this month China finished building their first offshore wind farm and, according to Keith Bradsher from The New York Times, is making strong efforts “to build nuclear reactors and the most efficient types of coal power plants.” Meanwhile, the United States has yet to begin construction on its first offshore wind farm. According to New Energy Finance, China is on its way to manufacture 39% of turbines sold worldwide and 43% of solar panels sold worldwide, surpassing other countries in becoming the world’s largest manufacturer of wind turbines and solar panels. With multinational renewable energy corporations investing in and transferring their operations to China, according to the Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association, renewable energy industries are adding 100,000 jobs per year in China.

Many credit the effort of the Chinese government to focus on energy policy for the strides China has made in the industry. For example, the 2005 Renewable Energy Law was passed by the Chinese government requiring power companies to use renewable sources to generate a certain amount of electricity. By creating policies and incentives such as charging a high fee for those who use electricity, the Chinese government encourages the development of renewable energy practices. Though some states in the US have developed their own renewable energy policies, without a clear national policy or support for clean energy American companies, then demand for alternative energy practices will not be promoted.

Even though being number two in the worldwide race for renewable energy is not as bad as it sounds, if the United States does not begin to pursue renewable energy practices more aggressively, then soon the US could fall to the number three spot, and then number four, and so on. Like President Obama stated in a State of the Union speech at the beginning of this year, “I do not accept a future where the jobs and industries of tomorrow take root beyond our borders – and I know you don’t either.”
